He pinpoints the uniqueness of Edison and is here to give you a peek inside the operations of how we’ve become the professional’s choice for both building materials and customer service.
The Uniqueness of Builders’ General Edison
While all of our seven locations provide high-quality products and top-notch service, Edison is unique in many ways. One such way is the superstar who manages our Edison operation, Tim Bradley. Tim, a BGS employee for over 6 years, keeps everything running smoothly. Originally hired as an Assistant Manager, he was quickly promoted to Operations Manager within his first year.
Covering the top of New Jersey, Pennsylvania and multiple boroughs of New York City, Tim ensures hard-to-make deliveries land on the right doorsteps. Because the Edison location uses more man-hours to accomplish simple deliveries and service locations are more spread out, the job can become more difficult to manage. However, with just 17 employees at Edison, Tim makes it look easy.
Dedicated Employees
Tim oversees one of our longest-tenured employees, Carmen Petrillo, our Edison dispatcher. With Carmen on our team for the past 30 years, we’ve been able to ensure everyone is on the same page at all times, resulting in our reputation for on-time and efficient deliveries, no matter the location.
Carmen is Tim’s second-in-command — anything Tim can’t handle, Carmen swoops in and takes care of it. A staple at our Edison location, focusing on Kitchen Design and Sales in addition to Dispatcher, Carmen is an integral part of our success.
John Powers is another standout Edison employee. As he makes himself available to resolve a lot of BGS’s smaller issues, he is simultaneously taking care of the influx of day-to-day orders to relieve Tim’s plate. Ready to jump in where needed, Edison couldn’t run smoothly without the hard work of John Powers.
The BGS Culture
Selling popular brands such as TimberTech AZEK decking, Andersen windows and ThermaTru doors, Tim loves the family-owned and operated aspect of BGS.
Tim says, “It’s easy to get something resolved because the family is involved in every step of the process. To me, it’s the best quality of the company. BGS takes on problems head-on, whereas other companies sometimes try to just push the problems away. BGS has been in business for over 90 years, and because the family is so involved, I think BGS will be around for a very long time.”
At BGS, we are focused on authentic connections and cultivating relationships with our customers. When asked what BGS does differently to help builders be successful, Tim says, “You have to be a real person. Customers want someone taking care of them that is a real person — a relationship is key. Builders and contractors are good — small-town people, boots and jeans kind of guys. Our customers need someone they can go to, and I’m their go-to guy.”
Tim takes initiative: When he sees a problem, he solves it. Customers know that if there is a problem, Tim, with the entire BGS team behind him, will do whatever it takes to provide a solution. If Tim tells someone their delivery will arrive between 10 and 11 a.m., it will absolutely be there. For example, a customer in Washington, New Jersey needed something important and the closest location wasn’t available, so the Edison team drove three hours to pick up the order and deliver it for them. When someone needs help, all seven locations work together to create one cohesive team.
What’s Edison’s “secret sauce”? If you’re on Tim’s team, you are all in. “It doesn’t matter what your job title is, everyone helps. If there’s a problem, everyone flocks to solve it. When it’s time to push, they push. Something good always comes out of the hustle. My guys are always willing to jump into the fire with me, and I try to do the same for my guys.”
Even though BGS, like many other companies in the industry, are currently facing staffing issues, our customer service and the customer’s needs are our highest priority. If staffing is short for the delivery team, Tim is out making deliveries himself. BGS will do anything to make our customers happy.
Making Jobs Easier
Our Edison experts have a few tricks — more like tools — up their sleeves to help make the jobs of builders and framers easier. To move their 50-feet wide beams, Edison utilizes boom deliveries and Moffett trucks to get materials where they need to be.
Boom trucks are basically cranes on a truck, allowing heavy materials to be lifted and placed in locations where it would otherwise take a whole team to move. For example, if a team is working on building a two-story building, a boom truck can take the materials and place them directly on the second floor. This alleviates people having to carry the materials, keeping them safe and speeding up the process. Many of Edison’s customers find this tool irreplaceable and unmatched, as it saves time and costs.
Similarly, Moffett trucks are like forklifts on the back of trucks. They are able to help with material movement on a jobsite. Builders and framers can explain where the materials are needed, and the Moffett truck can take them exactly where they need to go. This type of strategic direction can save workers time and strain while also saving money on labor costs.
Both of these convenient, helpful tools contribute to the Edison branch building positive and productive relationships with their customers.
