Builders’ General has been made aware of an issue with one of our vendors, Weyerhaeuser, which is limited to the Flak Jacket® product manufactured after December 1, 2016.  This issue does not affect any of the company’s other products.  Please take a moment to read the information below as it contains the who, what, where and how to proceed directly with Weyerhaeuser.

This is a further update on Weyerhaeuser’s efforts to address the issues that recently arose in some newly constructed homes with TJI® Joists with Flak Jacket® protection manufactured after Dec. 1, 2016 (“affected homes”).

We have identified a remediation procedure that addresses the issue in affected homes, which involves applying an additional top coat to the affected joists. In most cases, once remediation begins in a home, it will take less than a week to apply the coat and ventilate the basement.

What is the Process for Remediation?
We are contracting a third-party service provider to implement the remediation solution. We will work with you to prioritize and schedule remediation for affected homes.

If you would like to facilitate the scheduling for remediation directly with your homeowners, we will provide you with the relevant information and support you in any way we can. Alternately, if you would prefer that we schedule the remediation directly with your homeowners, we are fully prepared to manage that process.

Regardless of who manages the remediation process, we request that you provide us with a list of addresses for all affected homes with an indication of which ones are occupied. We need this information to track all remediation activities to completion.

What Should Homeowners Do?
Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend that occupants of affected homes should refrain from using their basements until the remediation is complete. If occupants are experiencing an odor or irritation, we recommend that they temporarily vacate their homes.

Weyerhaeuser is prepared to arrange and fully cover the cost of temporary housing to anyone who wishes to vacate their home. We will offer choices based on preference and what is available in their area. If a homeowner prefers to stay with family or friends, we will offer a stipend to support that arrangement. We are using our trusted vendor, Altair, to provide these services.

To initiate this process, homeowners should call Weyerhaeuser toll free at 844-294-4127 or email us at customercare@weyerhaeuser.com. We are happy to contact homeowners directly to initiate this process, or if you prefer to interact with them directly, you may use the attached letter to share the information.

What Should Builders Do?

  • Please continue to refrain from using all TJI® Joists with Flak Jacket® protection manufactured after Dec. 1, 2016. You may continue to use TJI® Joists with Flak Jacket® protection manufactured before Dec. 1, 2016, which are not affected by this issue.
  • If your contractors need to work in basements in affected homes, we recommend that you contact our customer care line for guidance (844-294-4127).
  • Please compile a list of addresses of affected homes, indicating which ones are occupied, and send that information to customercare@weyerhaeuser.com as soon as possible.

We want to assure you that we are working with urgency to resolve this situation. Weyerhaeuser values your business and our relationship, and we are absolutely committed to taking care of your customers to ensure this process is as easy as possible for you and them. We appreciate your patience and continued support as we implement the solution.

SEATTLE, July 18, 2017 /PRNewswire/ — Weyerhaeuser Company (NYSE: WY) today announced it is implementing a solution to address concerns regarding its TJI® Joists with Flak Jacket® Protection product.

The company has determined that recent customer feedback regarding an odor in certain newly constructed homes is related to a recent formula change to the Flak Jacket® coating that included formaldehyde-based resin. This issue is isolated to Flak Jacket® product manufactured after Dec. 1, 2016, and does not affect any of the company’s other products.

Flak Jacket® Protection is a coating applied to I-joists to enhance fire resistance, and it is not widely in use. The product is present in the basements of approximately 2,200 houses in various stages of construction in limited markets. Most of the houses are not yet occupied.

Weyerhaeuser is working proactively with its customers to address this situation and will cover the cost to either remediate or replace affected joists. The company has halted all production, sales and shipments of the product, and is collecting unused product from customers.

“We deeply regret the disruption and inconvenience this situation has caused,” said Doyle R. Simons, president and CEO. “Our top priority is to take care of our customers and their customers. We are absolutely committed to doing the right thing and resolving this situation as quickly as possible.”

The company expects the before-tax costs associated with resolving this issue to be approximately $50-60 million and a reserve will be recorded in the second quarter of 2017.

Weyerhaeuser notes that the company has sold a total of approximately $9.0 million of the Flak Jacket® product since December 2016, representing less than one half of one percent of the company’s total Wood Products sales. For the full year 2016, Weyerhaeuser reported net sales of $6.4 billion.
